News Lead Blog

The news story that I found that three news sites had in common is the one-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine. The news sites were CNN, The New York Times, and NBC News. On CNN, the title of the news article was “It’s now one year since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began.” On The New York Times the title of the news article was, “We Will Be Victorious, ‘Zelensky says on War’s Anniversary”. On NBC News, the title of the news article was, “Where Putin’s war stands a year after Russia invaded Ukraine.” There are several types of leads that can be found within the world of newswriting. The type of lead that was used on CNN was a summary lead because it answers several questions within it. The type of lead that was used on The New York Times was a single-item lead because it doesn’t go into detail, it just focuses on one or two main ideas. The type of lead that was used on NBC News was again a summary lead because it is more traditional, and it answers several of the five questions within it. Different leads are written to do different things when it comes to news. The questions that the CNN lead answers are who, what, when, and why. The questions that the New York Times lead answers are who, what, and when. The questions that the NBC News lead answers are who, what, when, and why. The question that the CNN lead does not answer is how. The questions that the New York Times does not answer are where and how. The question that the NBC News lead does not answer is how. The way a lead is written will determine how effective it will be. I feel that the CNN lead was effective because it speaks on an issue that the public is paying close attention to. I feel that The New York Times lead was effective because it offers hope and good news during difficult times on a day that marks the start of the event being written about. I feel that the NBC lead was less effective because it seems to be more straightforward and less of an attention grabber.
